The Best Pen for Writing Notes and Underlining in Your Bible

What is the best type of pen to use in a Bible?
Here are some of the key benefits: I’ve tried highlighters, dry highlighters, pencils and pens (ball point, gel, rollerball) without being satisfied with any for underlining and taking notes.

The short answer is pens which use pigment ink (i.e. archive quality pens).
Minimal bleed-through on thin paper (i.e. those used in Bibles)
Extremely fine nib/tip sizes (lets you write small while still being readable)
Water proof (accidental coffee spills anyone?)
Quick drying (great for left-handed people)

I’d prefer to write and underline with one size, so I chose a single nib size. I started with the 01, but eventually transitioned over to the smallest nib size (005). I came to love how fine the tip was for writing and underlining. If you’re going with a thinner nib, I’d also recommend underlin-ing in anything other than black. That way the color helps make the highlight stand out more.
I have been using a fine-tip Pentel R.S.V.P. pen for notes and underlines. While it has been decent, it pales in comparison to the Pigma Micron. Unlike the R.S.V.P., the Pigma Micron makes it effortless to write small, legible characters and consistent underlines.

"Why Is It So Hard For Some People To Read Their Bibles?" I regularly hear of people who would rather read devotional books than read the Bible. Now I understand that when you begin wading through Leviticus and come to the chapter on identify-ing and treating skin diseases, it doesn't exactly bring great joy and warmth to the heart. But we need to remember that even that passage plays a part in the unfolding plan. All parts of the Bible are equally inspired, but not all are "equally applied to my life in this very moment. ... One of the things I do is make it a habit to read through the Bible once a year. If I simply read the parts I think I need the most, I will miss a big part of God's design for my growth. ... I think [Christians] just can't figure out a lot of what's in the Old Testament, so they just skip it. But it is essential for believers to get the full picture of God's revelation.

"The Book That Is Essential For Knowing God" You must keep hearing the Bible’s message to grow as a Christian. This means hearing it read and preached, reading it, studying it, memorizing it, meditating on it, and applying it. A Christian needs the Bible like a human needs food and water. The need nev-er goes away. That’s why Peter writes, "Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation" (1 Pet. 2:2). That "pure spiritual milk" is "the living and abiding word of God," "the good news" (1 Pet. 1:23–25). Can you say with Job, "I have treas-ured the words of his mouth more than my portion of food" (Job 23:12)?

Some Closing Thoughts...
In the prelude of For the Love of God, D.A. Carson offers the following observation:
"The challenge [of reading our Bibles] has become increasingly severe in recent years, owing to several factors. All of us must confront the regular sins of laziness or lack of discipline, sins of the flesh, and of the pride of life. But there are additional pressures. The constant sensory input from all sides is gently addictive—we become used to being entertained and diverted, and it is difficult to carve out the space and silence necessary for serious and thoughtful reading of Scripture. More seriously yet, the rising biblical illiteracy in Western culture means that the Bible is increasingly a closed book, even to many Christians. As the culture drifts away from its former root-edness in a Judeo-Christian understanding of God, history, truth, right and wrong, purpose, judgment, forgiveness and community, so the Bible seems stranger and stranger. For precisely the same reason, it becomes all the more urgent to read it and reread it, so that at least confessing Christians preserve the heritage and outlook of a mind shaped and informed by Holy Scripture."

Consider this year to be ‘The Year Of The Bible’ at RFBC. Here are some of the strategies that will help us know more about God’s Word and be able to apply more of His Word to our hearts:
1) For the next several Sunday mornings, we will be looking at the book of Mark one paragraph at a time. This will allow God’s Word to dictate the flow and direction of each message as we walk through Mark’s gospel.
2) We are learning systematic theology on Wednesday nights and you can join us at any point because each week has a new topic unless we use two weeks to cover a certain topic such as ‘Why are there 66 books in the Bible?’ and ‘What does it mean to repent?’
3) Plus you will be receiving these newsletters each month that will feature articles to help you be more consistent and more effective in your personal Bible Study.

"How can I grow in my understanding of sound doctrine?" from 9Marks by permission
1. Give heed to the preached Word. Discuss the ser-mon afterward with friends and family.
2. Study the Scriptures diligently. Gaining a broad and deep grasp of Scripture is the most important way to grow in the knowledge of God.
3. Read good books about theology and doctrine. (ex. Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology)
4. Discuss the Bible with mentors and friends. As you discuss the Bible’s teaching, apply it to your lives together.
5. Do evangelism. Explaining the gospel to non-Christians and answering some of their objections will strengthen your grasp on the gospel and sharpen your ability to communicate the gospel.
6. Teach the Bible and theology to younger Christians.

"Transmitting The Word" An Interview With John Piper (selected questions and answers from this interview)
BSM: How should we approach the Bible when reading it?
PIPER: I’m torn as to which approach to take in answering that. I want to say right off the bat that we should approach the Bible with reverence. And yet I’m aware that there might be peo-ple reading this who don’t even know enough about the Bible to know whether it should be revered or not. Maybe they’ve barely even read it. Because of the history of the Bible, exerting power in the lives of people for good for over two thousand years, I think I would say to those people, "Come to the Bible with a sense of expectation and openness that here you might find something vastly more wise and more penetrating and more world-shaping than any of the con-temporary ideas you are presently dealing with."
And after they come, I think they will discover that this is the very Word of God and, therefore, it should be approached with a sense of reverence. And it should be approached with a sense of need and with a sense of expectation that God has given us this Word in order to meet our needs, to convict us of sin, to bring us to the point of forgiveness, and then to give us hope.
Second Timothy 3:16 says that the Scriptures are inspired by God and are sufficient for sound doctrine and every good work. There’s nothing God expects of us that He does not provide in this Word. He helps us understand what to do and gives us the motivation to do it. There’s a high-level expectation that I think people ought to have when they approach the Bible.

BSM: How can we make time for the Bible?
PIPER: I don’t think it’s merely a function of time. It’s a function of earnestness and faith. A per-son must build into their life a regular encounter with God, personally and quietly meditating on His Word. I think the early morning is the best time, because it sets the tone for the whole day. If for some reason that time can’t work, then midday or evening.
Get the Bible, the time, and the place — make sure it’s planned — and then meditate on a por-tion of Scripture: a chapter, verses, or several chapters, depending on what you can do. Memorize some verses, or even phrases, that appear especially precious to you.
This morning I memorized, "I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts" (Jer. 31:33). That was my little nugget that I took away from this morning’s devotion so that I could, all day long, reassure myself that God would do that for me.
You don’t need hours and hours with God every day, but you do need to have time with God orienting your mind, taking something into your heart, letting your heart express itself to God in communion — taking faith’s renewal and walking with God through the day, reminding yourself of what you saw in the morning.
I don’t think you need to be a "professional" preacher like me in order to enjoy deep and glori-ous things with God. In fact, some of the deepest saints that I’ve ever met, who outshine me, have not been "professional" Christians.

BSM: How would you counsel someone to begin anew who hasn’t read their Bible in a long time?
PIPER: I would encourage them to get a fresh Bible — I’m not too concerned about what version — and then begin a reading program in the New Testament with some passages from the Old Testament. They should also get into a good church or small group that loves the Bible. And these two things — your per-sonal encounter with the Bible and exposure to what God is teaching you through other people about the Bible — will cause the Bible to come alive again as you pray and ask God to make it come alive.

I asked the tamborine girls to sing with me during the worship service and since we sung 'Amazing Grace', we became the 'Amazing Grace Choir'.

Even Matthew looked tall in the Philippines!

One night, we had fish soup with our meal. I don't know what it was really called but since it was a chunk of fish in a soup bowl of water, we called it fish soup. Did I eat it? No, I did not. But Greg smiled really big before he tried it.

The music was amazing... so lively and so God-honoring. Not only that, but the praise team members got along incredibly well. That's unusual. You know how musicians can be sometimes...

We took a ride to a 'spring' for those who wanted to go swimming on our 'day off'. The scenery was beautiful as you can see in this photo.

We had "19" people in the van that we rode in. They said "19" because they counted Aaron and me twice because of our size.

Another photo opp. It seemed like everyone had a camera because we were always be asked to be in a picture. But after all, don't all young people love Santa Claus?

This 'spring' was built in the middle of nowhere. How come our 'springs' don't look like this??????????

I got to sit in the front seat since I was 'huge' and so I got to take this pic of our team. They look so cozy.

This was our last evening meal at the camp before heading to Magpet. The food was incredible each day. The mangos were very soft and sweet.

These last two photos are from Magpet, which was the last day that Matthew and I were with the team. We were ready to go home but at the same time, we really didn't want to leave our team and our new friends.

Greg Crenshaw and I were asked by this group of ladies for a photo. Many people would stop us as we were walking and ask for a photo so not only did we pose for their cameras, we often got one on our cameras as well.

The scenery was incredible in the jungle with all of the plants, clouds, and the mountains in the distance.

This is one of the classes I taught. These young men and women were such a joy to talk to. I really enjoyed their participation in class as I asked questions and gave illustrations.

Greg Crenshaw, pastor of Vine Hill Baptist Church, taught one of his breakout sessions in the tabernacle. When he finished his lesson, we had Q&A time and dealt with topics such as baptism, church membership and more.

Aaron Shipp, pastor of First Baptist of New Haven, played football with the youth during the break. He was called 'Mr. Athletic'. Matthew was called 'the spirit of Spurgeon'. Did I get a nickname also? Oh yeah, 'Santa Claus'! Why? Of course, my gray whiskers and my 'big belly'. I told them that next time I come back, I would be smaller. Their reply? "No, Pastor Bruce, we will miss your belly." so I answered, "I hope to miss my belly, too."

I asked Greg to take this photo of me in front of Bethany Hall where I would be teaching a morning session with him. What is really funny about the people in the Philippines is when you point a camera at some one, everyone in the surrounding area will rush together to be in the picture with you. These three photos are only seconds apart. :)

Greg and I had a game plan going into this break-out session... I would do the first half and then turn it over to him for the second half. Again, I said that was the game plan. I was told that I didn't need a translator so I started teaching. About half way through, I am told that they do need an interpretor so I backtrack in the lesson to get them caught up. When I was done with what I had set out to do, I checked my watch and was surprised to see that I didn't fill the first half like I thought I would. So I am thinking, "I bet Greg thinks I didn't teach very long..." but what actually happened was my watch had lost about twenty minutes so Greg was actually thinking something like "Bruce isn't leaving me much time to teach.".

Our topic that morning was 'What Is The Gospel?' and Pastor Jose was helping the pastors understand what the Bible says about the gospel and how that differs from what the world says about the gospel. Greg taught them about some 'false gospels' such as 'God promises to make you rich'. The Q&A time was very informative concerning what they know and where they need help.

I enjoy listening to Greg teach because of his style... he is very smooth in his delivery and is able to ask the questions that the congregation wants someone to ask and then he answers it. He had a great question from one man and Greg's answer came out so fast, he didn't leave time for Jonathon to interpret for him. When I got his attention, I asked him, "Can you go back and allow Jonathon to catch up with you?" They both laughed and Greg replied "I don't think so."

As the music started in the tabernacle and the people started coming in, you could feel the energy level building up. I was so impressed with the many people who used their musical gifts to lead us in worship. People of all ages... even little kids who looked like they could barely hold a guitar, much less play it, but yet they had an opportunity to play in their own praise team during one of the services.

In this photo, Pastor Lito and I are preaching the morning service. It was 10:30am Sunday morning at the camp but my church family was praying for me at that same time (which was actually 10:30 pm Saturday night). I am so grateful for my church family who not only encouraged me to go on this trip but also helped raise the money. Thank you, RFBC.

Matthew and I waiting for the evening worship. He was a late addition to the trip. He was supposed to go on another trip but it got cancelled so I asked him to go with us. I am so glad that God made it happen.

Before the worship service, we had our supper together. The food was prepared over open fires and the food was amazing. Our meal times were filled with great fellowship and special memories.

Greg and Vickie Cochran poses for a quick photo at supper. Greg is our team leader and was very encouraging to us, especially since four of us had never been to the Philippines.

Hannah Cochran and Daniel Wilson work so well together. They minister each week as part of the praise team at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Shepherdsville.

"Home away from home": this housing unit was built by missionairies years ago and we were very thankful to have such provisions in the middle of the jungle. I roomed with Aaron Shipp and Matthew Spandler-Davison and we have a great time together... we had so many laughs no matter what time of the day!

Ligaya can sing so amazingly. Such as sweet voice and during one of the worship services, she sung a duet with her mother, Juliet, and it was totally amazing.

Pastor Lito and I have so much in common, I think we are twins. His sense of humor proved to be quite entertaining... during one of the worship services, when they were giving us a string of wooden beads as a gift, he gave me mine as he laughed and said, "You are worthy of my holy kiss." How can you not laugh at that when he says that right in the middle of the service???

Here is the tabernacle as we approached it that Sunday morning. Pastor Lito interpretted for me as I preached the message that morning. And I loved to hear him sing. His voice was so full and powerful.

Here I am taking care of all of the luggage while the rest of the team has coffee or something enjoyable. But not me, I am stuck with all of this stuff! (Bless my heart. I know you feel my pain.)

Here we are visiting the tabernacle to see where our worship services would be held. Each service was a true blessing to experience. We had different worship teams lead us each service and everyone was so supportive of us.

One song that was sung during the invitation was in cebuano and even though I could not understand the words to the song, I could definitely recognize the power of adoration for God in it. GOD IS AWESOME IN ANY LANGUAGE! AMEN?

Here is a close-up view of the banner behind the pulpit area. By the way, we got to hear some Southern Baptists from the Philippines sing Southern Gospel songs that I have known for years. That was lots of fun!

Do you know the man in this picture? His name is Dr. Jack McKinney and according to his website, he is a 'pastoral counselor' after serving as pastor at Raleigh’s Pullen Memorial Baptist Church from 2000 to 2009. Before that, he was the senior minister of Bethesda First Baptist Church in Bethesda, Maryland.

Before I give you any more of his resume, let me tell you why I am writing about this man today. McKinney appeared on the O'Reilly Factor tv show on Fox last night and tried to convince Bill O'Reilly that there is no such thing as hell. He said that there have been lots of 'theological breakthroughs' in the last few years that have proven that hell is just a figure of speech instead of being a real place that is mentioned in the Bible in many passages of Scripture. BE VERY AWARE OF PEOPLE LIKE THIS WHO TRY TO CHANGE GOD'S WORD TO ACCOMODATE THEIR OPINIONS OR LIFESTYLES.

This man clearly is not a Biblical preacher based upon his misguided ideas about hell as well as his main ministry focus listed in his bio from his website...
At Pullen, one of Dr. McKinney’s main priorities was ministry within the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. In 2004 he was named the “Straight Ally of the Year” by the Triangle Business and Professional Guild. In 2005 he was honored with the Equality Award by the Human Rights Campaign of the Carolinas for his work in trying to legalize same-sex marriage in North Carolina. Another prayer was answered today... we have already partnered with local churches to make a bigger impact in the New Haven area. We have already partnered with a large group of pastors in the Philippines. But what about our 'Samaria'?

Welcome to Pittsburgh. Pictured above are Beth and Barry Whitworth with James Hogan, all ministering in the Pittsburgh area. They are planting churches and changing the climate of their city through prayer and team work.

So I invite you to pray for Barry and all of his partners in Pittsburgh as they try to raise the spiritual level of the 'Steel City'. Such a great need is being met by such a great desire and such a great Provider. Thank You, Jesus, for You are doing in Pittsburgh through people like Beth, Barry and James.

Today, we visit verse 3 of this passage...

2 Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. 3 At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— 4 that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak. 5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. Col 4:2-6 (ESV)

What a timely request for prayer! Just as Paul asked for prayer support in his ministry, so am I... and not just for me but for all of our pastors and teachers so that we would be able to say what God wants us to say in the way that He wants us to say it and when He wants it said. He said 'pray for us' showing his awareness of self limitations when it comes to knowing what it takes to reach people for Jesus Christ. Yes, he knew the scriptures and yes, he had experience, but just because one approach worked with one person doesn't mean it will work with the next person. And not only that, he was reaching CROWDS of people at the same time with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Years ago, I heard of the 'Three Open Prayer' that you and I should use each day.
1. 'Lord, open the door for me to share Your good news about Jesus.'
2. 'Lord, open my mouth that I was say what you want said.'
3. 'Lord, open their hearts to receive what you have for me to say.'

Be faithful to God because He is already been so faithful to us. I want to close this post with the chorus of a great hymn...
Great is Thy faithfulness, great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning, new mercies I see.
All I have needed, Thy hands have provided
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto Thee.

Would you? Would you love Jesus enough to do whatever He wanted you to do? Even if it meant leaving your homeland and your parents, grandparents, and friends to relocate to the other side of the world? Would you do it?

People like this man would. In fact, he IS. Meet Jacob Brothers. To hear Jacob talk or preach or pray, you can't help but notice his love for Jesus. And now he is showing that love in another step of faith... a BIG step. Leaving a small county town that only has one traffic light to Scotland to pastor a church because Jesus wanted him to go. That's love.

But then again, who has shown more love than Jesus Christ? Nobody but Jesus could have and DID die for you and me so that we wouldn't have to go to hell when we die. If we will put our trust in Jesus by asking Him to forgive us of our sins and by asking Him to take control of our lives so that we can please God in our thoughts, words, and actions, then when we die, we will spend eternity in heaven with God, Jesus, and all of the saints.

So today, I ask you to pray for my friend and fellow pastor, Jacob. Pray that he and family are safe as they travel and that God is glorified in their lives as they start this new chapter in their lives.

2 Pray diligently. Stay alert, with your eyes wide open in gratitude. 3 Don't forget to pray for us, that God will open doors for telling the mystery of Christ, even while I'm locked up in this jail. 4 Pray that every time I open my mouth I'll be able to make Christ plain as day to them. 5 Use your heads as you live and work among outsiders. Don't miss a trick. Make the most of every opportunity. 6 Be gracious in your speech. The goal is to bring out the best in others in a conversation, not put them down, not cut them out. Col 4:2-6 (MSG)

NO MORE COMPLACENCY

In the last several weeks, my spiritual walk has been going through an 'extreme makeover'... evaluating and re-evaluating, reading and studying, asking and explaining, and most of all, praying. Praying for guidance. Praying for direction in certain areas. Praying to be more effective in my personal life as well as in my ministry life.

One of my 'discoveries' is that there are some areas in my ministry that need to be looked at to make sure that I am pleasing God through the decisions that I make each week. Yes, we are to reach people for Jesus Christ and yes, we are meet them where they are but we are not to 'water down' or compromise the seriousness of what God wants us to do and how He wants us to do it.

I have realized that part of the reason that we have so many complacent churches in America is because we have so many complacent pastors in America. Last year, I went through several areas in my life and in my spiritual walk that I was just 'going through the motions'. Not necessarily intentional about it, but just acted that way. So as we continue living this new year, I am asking God to help me correct those issues by renewing my mind through His Word and through prayer. Instead of just doing what I would normally have done in the past, I am trying to re-align it with God's Word to make sure that I am going the right direction.

Do you have areas in your life that you need to re-energize and serve God like never before? What areas in your life have been neglected in the last year? WATCHING AND PRAISING

Another day in Colossians 4...

Col 4:2-6 (ESV)

Today, we will look at the next phrase... 'being watchful in it with thanksgiving'. If we don't pray specifically, then how will we know our prayer has been answered? Sometimes we pray things that are so vague that there is no way to know if it has been answered or not. For example, if we say 'Lord, be with Sue this week' but we don't ask God to do anything specifically, then have we asked Him to do something different from what He has already promised to do? Did He not say in scriptures over and over that He is with us wherever we go? But if we ask God to be with Sue this week as she goes to the doctor so that she will know no matter what that God is giving her strength and endurance during a difficult time... then we have asked for something. That's where being 'watchful' comes in.

After we pray for something to happen, we need to be watching for the answers to come. If God answers the prayer but we don't see the answer, we keep asking for something that has already happened. If we ask 'random' prayers, we have no idea where to look for the answers but if we pray specifically, then we know what to look for.

And now for the other key word in the second phrase... thanksgiving. When you thank God for something you have been praying for? The first time you pray about it. If you wait until the prayer is answered, you may give up before the answer comes or you may not give God the credit that He deserves. So thank Him from the beginning and say something like "Lord, even though I don't see it yet with my physical eyes, I have faith that You are already taking care of this situation and I thank You for that.' By thanking God on the front end, you no longer have to carry the burden anymore because you have given it to Him to take care of. And when your hands are no longer carrying a burden, then they are free to use when you praise the Lord or serve your neighbor... Keep praying!

CONTINUE STEADFASTLY IN PRAYER

Today, I want to return to these verses again and you will see why in a moment...

Col 4:2-6 (ESV)

Look at the first two words of verse 2... "Continue steadfastly". Is your prayer life on a continual basis or is it off and on depending on how busy you are or what emotions you are going through? The apostle Paul says says to continue praying. In 1 Thessalonians 5, he says to 'pray without ceasing'. Not just praying when you get a bad report from the doctor. Not just praying when you need more money in your bank account. But continually.

The second word, 'steadfastly', means to "endure patiently. A steadfast person is one who is reliable, faithful, and true to the end. Paul said Jesus was a person of steadfastness (Rom. 15:3-4). The NAS translates steadfastness with “perseverance” (2 Thess. 1:4). James said that trials that test our faith produce steadfastness (1:3 KJV “patience”; NAS “endurance”; NIV “perseverance”).—Holman Bible Dictionary"

So as we pray each day, let it be continual throughout the day and not just occasionally. Let us be faithful in our prayers patiently waiting for the answer. Amen?

"WHAT GETS WET AS IT DRIES?"

Last night, our son, Blake, asked us a riddle. "What gets wet as it dries?" Rhonda and I didn't guess the answer so he gave it to us... "a TOWEL". We laughed because it was a good riddle but this morning after my prayer time in my office, I thought about the connection between that towel and our church family (no, I am not asking you to figure out this riddle.). When you use a towel, you want one that is dry and clean. As you use the towel, the moisture is removed from you by the towel. And once the towel has done it's job, you feel better, right? (I know what you thinking right now... you are thinking "so what does that have to do with your church family?")

You wanted the towel because you were needing something to remove something (water in this case) from your body. If the towel was already wet, it would not dry you and if the towel was dirty, it would get you dirty as well.

Maybe there is something in your life, not "just on your body", that needs to be removed. If you have a church family, they can help share that burden with you. In fact, just as the towel did it's job by taking the water off your body, the church family does it's 'job' by taking some of the burden off you. If the church family wasn't ready to do it's job (like a dry towel), it couldn't help you either. And if the church family wasn't spiritually minded (clean), they couldn't and wouldn't help you. I like what my wife just told me. She says a towel can wrap around you to warm you up. And can a church family.

That's why it is so important that we pray for each other continually. That's why we should ask "how can I pray for you today?". God does not want to us to try and carry our own burdens without giving them to Him. Our church family helps us take those burdens off of our backs and lay them at the feet of Jesus. So, my friend, how can I pray for you?

2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Gal 6:2 (ESV)

These verses really grabbed my attention this week. I know I have read them many times before but not like this time. As a pastor, I am experiencing a personal revival right now and have been for the last few weeks. As energizing as that is, I also see even more need for us to pray for each other, for our churches, our communities, our nation, and yes, our world.

As we pray, we need to be thankful to God for all that He is, has done, and has promised to do. We need to pray for all pastors, worship leaders, teachers, deacons, trustees, etc. We need to pray for all those who work in the church's nurseries and kitchens. We need to pray for those who type the bulletins and those who clean the floors. BECAUSE OUR CHURCHES NEED TO REACH MORE PEOPLE FOR JESUS CHRIST. WILL YOU PRAY FOR US?

"HISTORY MAKERS AND WORLD SHAKERS"

I have been blessed to be included in a special prayer group and today was my first day with these men. When my friend, Dan, prayed, I was so overwhelmed with how beautiful and how powerful his prayer was. As we prayed together, I felt so much of God's presence in the room and then it happened... Dan used a phrase that grabbed my attention and would not let go... "Lord, make us history makers and world shakers...". WOW, what an awesome way to say, "Lord, help us do our part in fulfilling Your mission here on earth.".
So often, we pray things like "Lord, take care of me and give me what I want...". You might as well admit it because deep down you know that I am right. We are to ask God for our 'daily bread' but we are not to be the focus in all of our prayer. The best way to see your prayer answered is to pray for somebody else. And nothing is more important than praying for the salvation of someone else.
So, Lord, just as Dan requested... please help us become history makers and world shakers. Give us eyes that see what You see. Give us ears to hear what You hear. And give us boldness to act upon what we see and hear. Amen.

11. Is there a habit to change, start, or stop?

12. Is there an attitude to correct?

WHAT IS THE REAL REASON?

In John chapter six, look at what Jesus says...
26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.

Jesus had just fed the 5,000 men plus the women and children. Now the crowd catches up with Him on the other side acting like He's their best friend. But Jesus knew their real motive, they wanted food, not guidance. They wanted something for the moment, not for eternity.

What about you? If you are going to church and following Jesus, what is the REAL reason that you are doing so? Is it because of who He IS or because of what He can DO for you? Never let the gifts become more important than the Giver.

And if you are not going to church and if you are not trying to follow Jesus, what is the REAL reason that you are holding back? Are you trying to find happiness in someone or something else? Are you like the people in the crowd who were only living for the moment with no eternity in mind? Whatever the reason, I pray that you will meet my Lord, Jesus and that you will see how much He loves you. Don't take this next statement lightly... HE DIED FOR YOU SO THAT HE COULD SPEND ETERNITY WITH YOU IN HEAVEN.

If you have never asked Jesus into your life to forgive you of any and everything that is separating you from God, would you do it today? Would you ask Jesus to guide you so that you can live a life that pleases God as your heavenly Father? If so, then just ask God by using a prayer something like this...

Lord, I know that Jesus died for me to pay the price for the wrong that I have done. And I know that you raised Him up so that He could rejoin You in heaven. Please forgive me for all of my sin and give me a fresh start so that I can be a part of Your family. Jesus, please come into my life and lead in the right way. Thank You for saving me. Amen.

If you prayed that prayer and meant it, guess what? You are now headed in the right direction. Your sins are gone and Jesus is ready to lead you towards a whole new life. NEW YEAR, NEW STRUCTURE, NEW VISION

Wow, what a time to be a Christian! And what a time to be a pastor! I am so thankful that God has allowed me to pastor the same church for 11 years so far. And the good news is that I am more excited about the future than I have ever been. With this new year starting, we are in the process of developing a new structure of leadership in our church that will help us live out our 'new' vision. It's not that we have replaced our vision from before, it's just that it is much clearer now what we are trying to do and how to accomplish it.
One of the big changes taking place sometime this year will be adding a new music minister. We are currently taking resumes and asking God to give us the right leader who take care of the music in our church. I have been doing it for years and between the music and the preaching, my voice is lasting as long as it used to. (Yes, I know I am getting older, thank you.) So I ask that you pray for us to find such a person to fill that position.
The theme this year is "PREPARING FOR HEAVEN IN 2011" reminding us that we must prepare ourselves to meet God so that we may hear Him say 'Well done, My good and faithful servant.". Are you ready to meet Him? I hope you are. If not, why ask Him to forgive you of your sins and help you live a life that pleases Him? You will be glad you did!

A REALLY GREAT PRAYER

How many times have we tried to pray about something but felt God wasn't letting us past the fact that we had some unconfessed sin in our hearts? You may be saying something like, "But God, that's not why I am praying." God's Word is very clear that until we get things right with Him, our prayer lives are hindered. 18 If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. Psalms 66:18 (ESV)

So how do we get things right with God?
1. ASK GOD TO FORGIVE ALL OF YOUR SINS AND NAME THEM SPECIFICALLY. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. When my boys were school, I would not have wanted one of them to come into the house and say 'Dad, I got into trouble today at school... see you after while!". I would have stopped them and asked 'EXACTLY what did you do?". God already knows what we have done but He wants us to confess it to Him and not try to cover it up with the old "God, please forgive me of all of sins (whatever they are)".

2. ASK GOD TO GIVE YOU A FRESH START BY REPLACING THE DESIRES THAT GOT YOU INTO TROUBLE. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. If we try to change our habits without changing the desire to do such things, we will always struggle and be upset with ourselves. A clean heart and a right spirit is the only way to see a real change take place that will last.

3. ASK GOD TO HELP YOU STAY CLOSE TO HIM. 11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. The Bible says that the Holy Spirit does so many things and yet so many of us don't realize how much we need His presence in our lives. The Holy Spirit is responsible for convicting us and drawing us to Jesus, He helps us understand God's Word, He comforts and guides us, and so much more. I can't make it without Him in my life, can you?

4. ASK GOD TO GIVE YOU REAL JOY AND STRENGTH TO HELP YOU OVERCOME YOUR PRESENT SITUATIONS. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. People of all cultures are still trying to find joy in the things that the world offers but they will always come up empty. You will never find true joy apart from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. John 15:11 (ESV)

27 Turn not aside to the right hand or to the left; remove your foot from evil. Prov 4:25-27 (AMPLIFIED BIBLE)

It's that time again... another year is almost over. [I am not ignoring the fact that one of the greatest holidays is about happen... Christmas is just 9 days away. 'If there wasn't any Christmas, there would be no Easter.'] Another year to look back and ask all of those questions like 'How did I do at ____________?', 'Was this a good year or not?', etc. But after reading today's Bible verses, I am really dealing with this question "What direction is my last 12 months pointing to? As a Christian? As a pastor? As a husband? As a father? As an influence on those around me each week?"

I think this is an important question for all of us to ask ourselves, not only at the end of the year, but every day. If the Lord allows me to still be here this time next year, will I see progress and improvement in my life? Will I just go through the motions and rituals of life? Will I see my life going the wrong direction as far as priorities, character, and love are concerned? What about five years down the road? Ten?

Look at these verses again...
25 Let your eyes look right on [with fixed purpose], and let your gaze be straight before you.
26 Consider well the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established and ordered aright.
27 Turn not aside to the right hand or to the left; remove your foot from evil. Prov 4:25-27 (AMP)

Powerful! Let me quickly walk you through these verses and see how you can apply God's wisdom to your life as well.
1. STAY FOCUSED. 25 Let your eyes look right on [with fixed purpose], and let your gaze be straight before you. I heard a saying years ago that said "Keep the main thing the main thing." and that is so true. We need to stay focused on what really matters and not sweat the small stuff as much as we do. My wife is constantly and lovingly telling me that I let stuff bother me way too easily. [Lord, please help me with that.]

2. STAY ON THE RIGHT TRACK. 26 Consider well the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established and ordered aright. In addition to staying focused on what really matters, understand where you are supposed to be going and take the necessary steps to get you there. You can't get there if you don't know where 'there' is. Got it? [Lord, please help me with that one too.]

3. STAY CLOSE TO JESUS. 27 Turn not aside to the right hand or to the left; remove your foot from evil. You will tempted at times to step off the path to the right or to the left, but don't do it. You will never have true joy, true peace, true strength, or true satifaction unless you stay close to Jesus. The world can't give it to you, sex can't give it to you, alcohol can't give it to you, drugs can't give it to you, money can't give it you, possessions can't give it to you, (do I need to go any farther?)... only Jesus can give you all that. He said in John 10:10 that He came so that you and I could have an abundant life. A real life. [Lord, I need this one just as much as the first two.]

Pray with me, please... Heavenly Father, please forgive us for all of the bad decisions we have made this past year. Please forgive us for all of the wrong actions that we have done and give us a fresh slate today as we commit our lives to Jesus Christ, who died for our sins. May this not be a passing thought, but a true way of life for each one of us. In the name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.
